Separate nationality from the belongings' origin
An ordinary move of personal goods within the EU differs from an import from Great Britain, the USA or a South American country. Belgian customs says an EU move does not need a declaration for ordinary personal goods, while vehicles, pets, excise goods and other restricted items have their own rules. Name the actual collection point, including Northern Ireland or any special territory. Your nationality is a separate residence question.

Check residence and municipal registration
The right procedure depends on nationality, the purpose of your stay and how long you intend to remain. Qualifying EU residence and non-EU long-stay visa or residence routes differ. Check with the Belgian immigration authorities and the municipality where you will live, including the registration deadline for your status. Permission to visit or the purchase of a home does not itself establish the right to settle or work.

Prepare a non-EU household-goods declaration
For a non-EU move, Belgian customs requires a declaration and an application if claiming exemption. Standard conditions include at least 12 consecutive months of normal residence outside the EU and six months of possession and use of the goods. Import is normally within 12 months of the residence transfer, with restrictions on lending, hiring out or selling relieved goods for 12 months after import. Alcohol, tobacco, company vehicles and professional equipment are excluded from this exemption.

Ask the right school community about enrolment
Education is organised through Belgium's language communities. Ask the school and its relevant authority about admission, available places, language support and records needed for a child arriving from abroad. In Brussels, establish which community the chosen school belongs to. A home address does not by itself explain the school's admission process. Ask early about an arrival during the school year and keep recent reports and identity documents ready.

Make the delivery location unambiguous
Give the municipality, street or area and postcode when available. Include entrance details and explain whether the property contact and the person receiving the belongings are different people. For a flat, note the floor, lift and unloading distance. Ask who checks parking permissions and any building delivery restrictions.
Plan furniture and packing together
Check large furniture against doorways and lift dimensions. Mention delicate pieces needing particular care and anything to dismantle before collection. Share an inventory and useful photographs privately through the enquiry. The handling and packing proposal should reflect the actual belongings and the path into the new home.
Agree who receives the belongings
Record when keys are available, who meets the delivery and when the building can be accessed. Your arrival in Belgium may be a different day. Ask what the proposal includes for collection, transport, documents, delivery and placement. Explain any fixed handover commitments and keep the receiving contact informed if plans change.
Leaving Belgium instead?
Describe the receiving country and the handover at the Belgian property. A UK return or another international direction needs its own import and residence checks. Tell us both endpoints, your inventory and available dates so that the route can be assessed.
Your questions answered
Is municipal registration the same as customs clearance?
No. Registration concerns your residence; the household shipment has its own import requirements. Agree document responsibilities for each rather than assuming one approval covers both.
Can I enquire before the key handover is confirmed?
Yes. Explain the expected town, dates and belongings, and say which details remain uncertain. Update the address, access and receiving arrangements before confirming the delivery plan.
Can I choose a school after choosing the property?
You can, but it helps to ask the relevant schools about admission and language support while comparing areas. Places and processes depend on the school and community; do not assume a move guarantees a preferred place.
Keep the official checks with your moving plan
