Name the town, island and collection country
Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands need an exact destination. The Canaries are inside the EU customs territory but outside its VAT territory; Ceuta and Melilla have different customs and tax boundaries. Great Britain, the USA and South American origins need non-EU import checks. Ordinary EU goods and Northern Ireland require attention to their applicable rules, rather than an assumption based on the country name.

Match the residence route to your circumstances
A non-EU national moving for more than 90 days normally needs the appropriate national visa or residence route, depending on purpose and any exemption. Work, study, family and other residence categories are distinct. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals use a separate framework, with registration requirements to check. Your collection country does not decide your immigration status. Use the Spanish authorities to establish the route before committing to a moving date. Check the Spanish consulate responsible for your current country of residence.

Check household-goods relief before packing
Spanish transfer-of-residence relief is conditional. The standard requirements include prior normal residence outside the relevant territory for at least 12 months and possession and use of qualifying belongings for at least six months. Continued use, import deadlines and restrictions on later disposal also matter. Customs duty and import VAT do not have identical territorial boundaries. Ask which declaration, evidence and exclusions apply to your actual destination, especially for an island move or new purchases.

Start school enquiries in the receiving area
Contact the education authority for the autonomous community and the schools you are considering. Ask about admission dates, an arrival during the school year, address evidence, teaching language and support for a child joining from abroad. Spain does not require formal recognition of overseas studies simply to enter primary or compulsory secondary education; later qualifications can need a different check. Keep school reports and identity records accessible while the move is arranged.

Make the inventory useful for the paperwork
List furniture and estimated boxes, identifying fragile pieces, new purchases and items needing particular care. Agree who prepares, checks and submits the customs documents and what evidence you must supply. Box labels should match the inventory. Keep passports, residence documents and school records with you rather than in the shipment.
Think about access before the final address is agreed
For an apartment, give the floor, lift dimensions, unloading point and any building booking requirements. At a rural home, mention narrow lanes, gates or a steep approach. Ask the property contact about vehicle restrictions. For an island destination, identify the island and town so that onward delivery is part of the assessed route.
Compare the proposal against the actual load
A few boxes and selected furniture need a different brief from a full household. Tell us what packing help you want and what remains undecided. Check collection, transport, document handling and delivery inclusions, along with any access or destination charges. Keep the date you leave, the date you travel and the date someone can receive the belongings separate.
Moving from Spain or returning to the UK?
Enter both countries and explain who can hand over the belongings in Spain. The receiving country determines its own residence and import checks. A UK return also needs the correct distinction between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Do not reuse inward-move paperwork without checking the new direction.
Your questions answered
Can I get a quotation before choosing a Spanish property?
Yes. Give the town or island and explain which dates or address details are provisional. Share your likely belongings and update the access and receiving arrangements before the plan is confirmed.
Should I mention that the destination is an island?
Yes. Name the island and town, even if the postcode is not yet known. The actual route and applicable customs or tax territory need assessment.
Does a Spanish residence visa make the shipment tax-free?
Residence permission and import relief are separate decisions. Check customs eligibility and documents for the belongings as well as the right to live in Spain.
