Does your nationality affect how your belongings are treated?
No, the origin of the belongings matters for customs, and your nationality is a separate residence question. An ordinary move of personal goods within the EU differs from an import from Great Britain, the USA or a South American country. Belgian customs says an EU move does not need a declaration for ordinary personal goods, while vehicles, pets, excise goods and other restricted items have their own rules. Name the actual collection point, including Northern Ireland or any special territory.

How do you register where you live?
The right procedure depends on your nationality, the purpose of your stay and how long you intend to remain. Qualifying EU residence and non-EU long-stay visa or residence routes differ. Check with the Belgian immigration authorities and with the municipality where you will live, including the registration deadline for your status. Permission to visit, or buying a home, does not by itself give you the right to settle or work.

What does Belgian customs need for a non-EU move?
For a non-EU move, Belgian customs requires a declaration, plus an application if you are claiming exemption from duty and tax. The standard conditions include at least 12 consecutive months of normal residence outside the EU and six months of possession and use of the goods. Import is normally within 12 months of the residence transfer, and you may not lend, hire out or sell relieved goods for 12 months after import. Alcohol, tobacco, company vehicles and professional equipment are excluded from this exemption.

Who do you ask about school enrolment?
Education in Belgium is organised through the language communities. Ask the school, and the authority it belongs to, about admission, available places, language support and the records needed for a child arriving from abroad. In Brussels, find out which community the school you want belongs to. Your home address does not by itself explain a school's admission process, so ask early about joining part-way through the school year and keep recent reports and identity documents ready.

How exact does the delivery address need to be?
Give the municipality, street or area and postcode when you have them, and include entrance details. Tell us if the property contact and the person receiving the belongings are different people. For a flat, note the floor, the lift and the unloading distance, and ask who checks parking permissions and any building delivery restrictions.
How do furniture and packing fit together?
Check large furniture against doorways and lift dimensions. Tell us about delicate pieces that need particular care and anything to dismantle before collection. You can send an inventory and photographs privately through the enquiry, and the packing and handling proposal should reflect the actual belongings and the route into the new home.
Who receives the belongings in Belgium?
Record when keys are available, who will meet the delivery and when the building can be accessed. Your own arrival may fall on a different day. Ask what the proposal includes for collection, transport, documents, delivery and placement. If you have fixed handover commitments, say so, and keep the receiving contact informed if plans change.
Leaving Belgium instead?
Describe the receiving country and the handover at the Belgian property. A UK return or another international move needs its own import and residence checks. Tell us both endpoints, your inventory and your available dates, and we can assess the route.
Your questions answered
Is municipal registration the same as customs clearance?
No. Registration concerns where you live, while the household shipment has its own import requirements. Agree who handles the documents for each rather than assuming one approval covers both.
Can I enquire before the key handover is confirmed?
Yes. Tell us the expected town, your dates and the belongings, and say which details are still uncertain. Update the address, access and receiving arrangements before the delivery plan is confirmed.
Should I choose a school before or after the property?
Ideally while you compare areas. Ask the relevant schools about admission and language support early, because places and processes depend on the school and its community. A move does not guarantee a place at the school you prefer.
Keep the official checks with your moving plan
